Daylight saving time dies in Canada

The premiers of Alberta and the Northwest Territories have announced in the last two days that they're done changing clocks:

N.W.T. Premier R.J. Simpson announced Monday that the territory will move to end seasonal time changes and will adopt a year-round time standard instead.

Simpson also said public engagement has shown a majority of N.W.T. residents "expressed support for ending seasonal time change and moving to a year-round time."

The move follows an announcement from the Alberta government to end its seasonal time change, said Simpson.

Yukon ended its seasonal time change in 2020, while B.C. announced it would do the same earlier this year. Saskatchewan has long followed a standard time year-round.

So, right now, British Columbia and the Yukon Territory are on Mountain Standard Time (UTC -7); Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, and part of Nunavut are on Central Standard Time (UTC -6), Manitoba and parts of Ontario and Nunavut are on Central Daylight Time (UTC -5), and the rest of Ontario and Nunavut, plus all of Québec, are on Eastern Daylight Time (UTC -4). In November, the EDT and CDT parts of Canada will shift back to standard time, meaning everything from the Rockies to western Ontario will be on UTC -6.

Do the folks in Edmonton realize that the sun will rise there at 9:49 am on Christmas? I can't wait to see what they think of that.

China famously has one time zone for a country that spans five geographical time zones. It's closer to the equator, so the seasonal change in day length isn't as pronounced as at temperate latitudes, but even so, in winter, the Sun doesn't rise in western Xinjiang until after 10 a.m. Mind you, that's the least thing the Uighur people can complain about.
